AGM:

The A.G.M was held on October 21st and about 20 people attended.

Chairman Brian Mayo gave a run down on the achievements for the past year.

Each year seems to get better.

The Tree Trust may not have a lot of active members but when the need arises we get lots of help from lots of different sources. The results are all around Cambridge for all to see and use and enjoy.

You may walk or drive past many of the areas that we have been working on for years without even knowing what has been going on. The native bush is slowly replacing the scrub and gorse and blackberry on many of the riverbanks and creek edges.

Lesley Wyatt and Neville Kerr stood down from the management committee and Greg Liddy has joined it.

Trustees are: Ian Scott, Stephanie Blackie, Brian Mayo, and Leslie Wood.

Management Committee are:

Chairman Brian Mayo, Secretary Leslie Wood, Stephanie Blackie, Joy Steel, Kevin Steel,JimMcKnight, Greg Liddy, and a yet to be nominated Cambridge Community Board Member.

Our congratulation to Lesley Wyatt on being elected to the Community Board and to Julian Stone for his re-election to that board too.

WEB SITE:

Greg Liddy gave us an evaluation of our web site and explained what was available to viewers.

Our web site has been having about 2000 hits a month. They are mostly local or New Zealand but some have come from as far away as Finland.

VIDEO:

The evening finished with a video covering before and after views of areas that we have worked on over the year and some previous works of the established bush and trees that are up to 12 years old.

WORKS:

The major work was the Dominion Riverbank Track that is finished to the High Level Bridge waterfall.

They are now working on the last difficult piece on the town side of the river track that leads up to the top by the High Level Bridge. It is planned to make this part of the track a lot safer, less humpy and less muddy.

If you do venture over here in the next few weeks just take care and know that soon it will be up to the same standard as the track that we have just completed at the river level.

We have employed a person part time to do some work for us keeping the climbing weeds off our new plantings which has always been a headache.

The Corrections Department gang is back on the job after a break with other work around the kindergartens and schools.

The daffodil bulbs at Resthaven have been fenced so that the part of the paddock with them in is not grazed when the bulbs are growing, so that next year we should have a better display in the spring.

SPRING:

Spring is sprung with lots of different shades of green in the new growth and plenty of colours in the flowering trees.

 BIRDLIFE:

Tui have been seen a lot this spring in our local cherry trees and the bush about the town. We have been told many times about sightings in and around Cambridge.

We have had word from Landcare Research that they have banded 30 Tui and put transmitters on 18 of them so if you spot a banded Tui please inform Landcare Research on phone 8583700 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and they will have some one out to check. The birds have up to 4 bands, two on each leg but as it is hard to see the legs of Tui, if you spot any bands just let the research team know.

PINE AND GUM TREE REMOVAL:

It will be interesting to see what the river bank will look like when the pine trees are removed later this year. We have also asked the council to remove the gum trees opposite the skate bowl as they are at the last stage of their life and are likely to fall down any time soon. Some are in rather a dangerous state as they have split in half, half way up the main trunk.

HIGH LEVEL BRIDGE REVAMP:

The whole area around the entrance to the High Level Bridge can be revamped in time for the centenary of the Bridge in 2007.

The Camellia Walk (now the sign says Camellia Garden) looks better for the bit of a tidy up that it has had.  Our recent plantings have been mulched.

We have about 100 plants in the nursery for planting next year once we have made sure that we have cleared areas of weeds to plant them..

There are some good things happening on the green belt. The fences have had some maintenance done on them.

POLO CLUB TO MOVE:

The Soccer Club is to take over the Polo ground and the Polo Club is to shift to Lamb Street.

With the start of the new financial year subs are now due.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL.  Some members who pay late in the year may think it’s a bit off to get another bill so soon but we have to start somewhere.

Recent news items have stated that we have many indigenous species in this country that are in danger and we should all be working to save them. There are groups of conservationists that need any one who has time to spare. There are web sites which have information about proposed plantings. If you have the time, do look them up. .

Often it is overseas students who are keen to help and recent migrant language students. They understand the need to preserve our heritage.

Social Social Social Social

We are to have a pot luck B.B.Q.Social on the 25th of November at Brian Mayo's home 2 Dickens Place Cambridge.
