We saw an article about sowing native seed on difficult sites using mud balls and we thought we would give it a go. Anyone interested in helping us play mud balls? We have the seed ready to go.
Much progress has been made on the river track. We have at last finished the difficult section between the two sets of stairs on the lower riverbank track.
The contractors hired by the council have started to repair the stairs. With help from many sources we are hoping that the contractor will be able to do the second difficult section and make it easy to walk, by building a bridge structure to cover wash out areas.
The section from the High Level Bridge to Bath Street has been graded and about half of it has had the wooden sides and the base of mud mat and the metal installed. We are working on the section from the junction to the stairs back to where the metal has been dumped on Bath Street
Chute number five is in a different place. We are becoming quite expert at these now, as we work along we have to move the chutes to the point closer to where the metal is actually needed. Each new one has improvements over the previous one. In one place the chute went over a viaduct on trestle legs.
The correction gang were filling up the drainage channel when they were attacked by wasps, so throwing away their tools they fled the area. Two members of the gang had to be taken back to Hamilton after being badly stung.
While one of our members was out walking recently they met an elderly couple walking on the Riverbank Track. The lady was on crutches and was so pleased to be able to manage the track. She really enjoyed being out in the native bush with the river and all the wild life about.
You do not have to drive out into the country to get back to nature it is within walking distance of all our homes in Cambridge
The word is out that within the next two months there will be progress on the upgrade of Poets Track. This will utilize the new staircase under the High Level Bridge and then if the grade is flattened gently to lead up to Lumb Park we will all be able to manage this walk. At this time it is in a very poor condition for walking unless you are a mountain goat with gumboots.
It looks like we will soon have enough rain to be able to think about the planting of our trees for this year. If you would like to help, give us a ring or turn up at the Nursery. If you are not able to scramble around there are plenty of things to do at the nursery
We would like to see more of our members at the nursery and you can see just what we all do in our spare time.
This Town is rapidly moving towards becoming a city (20, 000 people.) We are three quarters of the way there now.
The need to get a plan for the future is important. So far there does not appear to be one.
If you have any ideas come and tell us or go to the Council.
We have put our submissions in to Council for this year’s Annual Plan. .
Plant and weed The Lake surrounds Improve the walking tracks in the Lake Park Upgrade Soldiers and Poets Track A cycle track to Lake Karapiro Open Dr Seddon Walkway.
These are much the same as previous submissions and we hope we can convince the Council to take more action
We also did a submission for the Parks and Reserves management that was advertised in the local paper...
We drove around all of them and looked at each one and then wrote what we thought needed to be done. How is that for rocket science?
Plus we added a few pieces of land they had forgotten to mention.
Live together like brothers,
But do business like strangers.
We hear that more sub-divisions are proposed for both sides of the Te Awamutu road. 400 plus sections.
The growth in this town is tremendous. We are lucky that we have so much reserve land for future sports grounds and recreational use, but we feel that some is in the wrong places. Leamington has too much and Cambridge North has too little.
It is hoped that the Council keeps a balance.
It is on the cards that the Gum Trees opposite the skate bowl will be removed by July of this year.
In the last few days the autumn colour on the trees around the town has been outstanding.
Let’s hope the wind stays away for a while so we can enjoy it.
Anybody who thinks deciduous trees don't do well in Cambridge should have a look about them now.
If you can't see the bright side, polish the dull side.
