Winter newsletter
As spring approaches we reflect on quite a harsh winter which has impacted adversely on some of our nursery plants. Four degree frosts have been a challenge for us and our more fragile plants. However we really have had a very fruitful winters planting and some 6500 plants have left our nursery and are in the ground at varied sites around Cambridge. Despite the cold we have had very pleasing attendances each Tuesday throughout the winter months and finding work for 24 to undertake has been a positive challenge for me.

It has been a busy summer with a regular group meeting weekly to undertake maintenance of current projects. Weekly there has been spraying to keep on top of weeds, pruning to curb excess growth of plants and even hand weeding close to winter 2014 plantings. In the nursery weeding and potting on of cuttings and of root trainers has kept us all busy. As a result some 12,000 plants are growing apace and need to find a home this winter. From a near empty nursery in October the busy summer of potting on has resulted in a really full nursery of mostly natives in PB3’ or 5’s many now a metre high and desperate to be planted into a new home around Cambridge. We have purchased many root trainer lines from three nurseries during the spring and all give us excellent service. After re-potting we are amazed at the rate they grow in our nursery.

Our 23rd year of Cambridge Tree Trust work is shaping up to be a very very busy one. The summer months have been a trying time for the Tree Trust with another drought. Following on from last summer’s drought there has been quite a bit of stress on our winter 2013 plantings and once again there is some plant loss especially at the Meadow Walk. The Tuesday group have met regularly each week during the long hot summer. Tasks have included watering nursery plants, plant propagation, spraying weeds, hand weeding, mulching and site preparation at both Lola Silcock Park and the Meadow Walk as we prepare for a big winter’s planting. The nursery at Thornton Rd is once again an absolute picture and it is chokka with healthy plants just waiting for the rains to arrive before we start planting them out. A new planting challenge for 2014 is Lake Te Ko Utu and in conjunction with the Waipa District Council we have been purchasing plants through the summer for this new project. A further challenge that is a goal for us to keep in mind is to plant 10,000 plants. Last year we achieved 9950. Let's crack this goal in 2014.

2014 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
2014 has been an outstanding record breaking year for the Cambridge Tree Trust in which there were many highlights. Our core group of close on 20 volunteers meets each Tuesday and have certainly made a difference to the Cambridge landscape this year by planting out more than 10,000 plants, mostly natives. This year we cracked 10,000 plants for the first time in our history. This group of active environmental enthusiasts have made our 23rd year of life an exceptional one. In addition we had a surplus of more than 5000 nursery stock and these have been actively promoted and given away to many groups like the Avantidrome, St Peters School, Te Awa Cycle Trust for riparian planting along the Waikato River and along the Te Awa Cycleway. Many donations resulted from this process.
There were many highlights in 2014 and this lists some of them.
2013 Chairman's Report.
2013 has been a busy, eventful and record breaking year for the Cambridge Tree Trust in which there were many highlights. Our core group of over 15 volunteers meets each Tuesday and have certainly made a difference to the Cambridge landscape this year by planting more than 9000 plants, mostly natives. This group of active environmental enthusiast have made our 22nd year of life an exceptional one.
In addition we had a surplus of 5000 nursery stock and these have been actively promoted and given away to many groups like Riding for Disabled, St Peters School, Te Awa Cycle Trust and Hospice Waikato for riparian planting along the Waikato River, along the Te Awa Cycle way and cleared Hamilton gullies. Many donations resulted from this process.
Autumn Planning
The summer months have been a quiet time for the Tuesday group who have met regularly each week. Weeding, mulching and site preparation at Lola Silcock Park and the Meadow Walk have been our main thrust as we prepare for a big winter’s planting. The nursery at Thornton Rd is an absolute picture and it is chokka with healthy plants just waiting for the rains to arrive before we start planting them out, principally on the Meadow Walk.
